GDL Rail Strike in Hamburg: Impact on Train Travel and Passenger Rights

From Wednesday morning at 2 a.m. to Monday evening at 6 p.m., the members of the GDL are once again called on to go on a rail strike. Train traffic in Germany will then be almost at a standstill for six days – this also means consequences for rail travelers and commuters in Hamburg.

The Hamburg S-Bahn announced on Monday morning that an emergency timetable would be set up for the duration of the strike – as with previous strike actions. “Please use subways and buses where possible,” it said on the website.

Rail strike in Hamburg: No S-Bahn – but buses and subways run

This is possible because the elevated railway is not part of the industrial action by the GDL. “The subways, buses and ferries are not affected by the strike,” said the HVV. However, isolated restrictions are possible.

Deutsche Bahn is expecting massive delays and numerous train cancellations in regional and long-distance transport. “Please refrain from unnecessary travel during the GDL strike and postpone your trip to another time,” the DB said. The company is trying to set up an emergency timetable.

The RE 6 (Westerland – Altona) should run between Westerland and Niebüll every three hours during rush hour. Individual trains will run between Husum and Niebüll. The DB also releases the Sylt Shuttle plus for local transport between Niebüll and Westerland. The RB 62 between Heide and Itzehose is expected to be canceled.

The railway is planning the trains on the lines between Neumünster, Kiel and Hamburg RE 7 and RE 70 to drive every two hours. The connections between Neumünster and Flensburg should run every three hours. The lines RE 8 and RE 80 (Lübeck – Hamburg) should be served every 60 minutes during the strike.

The trains of the RB 81 (Bad Oldesloe – Hamburg) are expected to run every 120 minutes, it was said. The replacement bus service due to construction work on the route is not affected by the strike.

GDL rail strike: Rail travelers have these rights

Passengers who would like to postpone their journey from January 24th to 29th due to the GDL strike can use their ticket at a later date, according to the DB. The train connection has been lifted. The ticket is valid for the journey to the original destination, even if it is reached using a changed route. Reserved seats can be canceled free of charge, it said. It is also possible to start the trips on January 22nd and 23rd.

Even in the event of strikes, it is possible to receive compensation for delays: If the train arrives at its destination more than an hour late, travelers can demand 25 percent of the fare. For more than two hours it is 50 percent. In addition, travelers delayed by an hour or more are entitled to drinks and meals. If it is clear that a journey cannot continue on one day, the train company must arrange a hotel or other accommodation – including the transfer there.
