Gavin Sanders will make his GT4 America series debut this weekend in California

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 by Eliane Gilain

Young Ontario rider Gavin Sanders continues his rise in motorsport as he debuts in the GT4 America series this weekend, in the SprintX class. Although only confirmed for the first race at Sonoma, Sanders still hopes to make the full season with former IndyCar driver and team manager Eric Bachelart’s Conquest Racing team.

Gavin Sanders got this wheel after a real epic while Conquest Racing and JMF Motorsports set up a program to help young drivers climb the ladder of motorsport. Sanders was invited to two tests, one in Louisiana (NOLA Motorsports Park), the other in California (at Buttonwillow). In all, five drivers were in the running to win this wheel. The young talents had to do a series of tests, on and off the track, in order to win the opportunity to race in GT4 America.

“Driving a Mercedes-AMG GT4 is like a rocket, it’s incredible, it’s like being in a video game,” says Gavin Sanders, who had never driven such a car before. “It’s a big step in the right direction for my career,” he adds before specifying: “I’ll be teaming up with Michai Stephens in the SprintX class. He is an excellent driver and a very good mentor, he helps me a lot”.

The first GT4 America SprintX event will be run on April 15 in Sonoma, California. This is a track that Sanders, who has made a name for himself in recent seasons in the Nissan Micra Cup and then Sentra, knows after testing there recently. However, if he can stay in the series beyond the first event, he will have to learn the rest of the tracks on the calendar: “I hope we will be able to do some tests before, but otherwise I am preparing on the simulator and I expect a big challenge when I get to the track! Gavin points out.

It is thanks to Danny Kok, Johnny Farrow and Éric Bachelart that Gavin Sanders can shine on the track with Conquest Racing as they are the people who set up the program to help young emerging drivers.

At this time, Gavin has no other concrete plans, but he would like to be back on the Canadian tracks when there are no scheduling conflicts. However, he is of course banking that this opportunity in GT4 America will launch his professional career in the United States.
