The vision that the computer would be like a window to everything that people want to know has been fulfilled. This was the first dream of William Henry Gates III, known worldwide as Bill Gates. He is the co-founder of Microsoft, a company that develops Windows, the most popular PC software in the world.

Gates, who was born in 1955, in Seattle, Washington, opens a new window today. This time to support science and health research.

Gates to the rescue of WHO

The United States government was the main sponsor of the World Health Organization (WHO), but on April 14 it suspended its financial support. Bill Gates came to the rescue: he became the main financier of the agency.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the American businessman and philanthropist decided to increase the financing by 250 million dollars, in order to continue supporting medical projects with global application, especially in the current context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The United States contributed about $ 900 million to the 2018-2019 budget, representing one-fifth of the $ 4.4 billion for that period. While the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated 530 million dollars, equivalent to 10% of the total.

This association was founded by Gates and his wife in 2000, when he abandoned the software business that he had successfully developed a decade earlier. Today, it is the world’s largest private philanthropic organization with more than $ 46 billion in assets.

The foundation, which has raised billions of dollars in contributions from other magnates like Warren Buffett, also offers grants to universities and scientific research centers with the aim of implementing plans to improve people’s living standards.

Science and Technology

The premise on which the Bill and Melinda Foundation is built is to deliver, through institutions, the latest in science and technology, especially for those with the greatest needs.

In developing countries it focuses on improving the health and well-being of the population, helping individuals to overcome hunger and extreme poverty. While in developed countries like the United States it struggles to ensure that young people, especially those with the least amount of resources, can access the necessary opportunities to improve their academic level.

On your site web, This foundation expresses that its projects have allowed millions of people each year to find ways out of poverty by adopting new technologies, investing in new business opportunities or finding new jobs.

It also points out that “women and girls have a unique power to reshape societies”, because when support is focused on them, a domino effect is achieved that has positive repercussions for families, communities and countries to achieve lasting benefits.

Another of its objectives is the “use of cutting-edge technologies both for specific initiatives and for the development of platforms that can provide cross-cutting support for the discovery of drugs and biological products.”

The foundation seeks to catalyze key functions that include continuous inspection of ever-changing scientific and technological innovation around the world.
