Economic and tourist engine, unmissable event of the international bullfighting scenea time for sharing and celebrating traditions, the Feria de Nîmes is a real treasure left as a legacy to the people of Nîmes.
Since the 50s
On March 5, 1952, five bullfighting clubs created the first official committee for the organization of bullfights in Nîmes. Local actors, elected officials and traders, join forces with this initiative to set up a first event over the three days of the Pentecost weekendconsisting of a Camargue race and two bullfights.
An international scene
Having become an international bullfighting scene and a place of celebration attracting many celebrities, the Feria de Nîmes, becomes one of the most popular events in France. Aficonados, partygoers, tourists…: 1 million people have been there every year for forty years.
The Feria is getting longer
Between 1952 and 1980, the event was limited to the Pentecost weekend, with bullfighting shows with the great Spanish matadors. In the 1980s, under the leadership of Mayor Jean Bousquet and Simon Casas, it took on another dimension with increased resources.extends over a week of street parties and bullfighting shows, which promotes the growth of bodegas and attracts many personalities and celebrities.
Winter Fair and Museum
The Feria des Vendanges is created and in 1988 the Feria d’hiver under the bubble of the Arènes. It was the era of the great squabbles, scripted by Royal de Luxe. In 2002, when the city had 80 bullfighting clubs, the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Feria offered the opportunity to open the Bullfighting Cultures Museum, which each year explores a cultural, historical or artistic dimension of bullfighting cultures through temporary exhibitions.
Screenings and photos
For this anniversary Feria, the City is organizing exceptional screenings of archive photos on the Maison Carrée and highlights on the Arena grid the portraits of the 7 most memorable bullfighters since the creation of the event. From June 1 to October 30 is held an anniversary exhibition at the Taurine Cultures Museum Henriette and Claude Viallat, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the museum and the 70th anniversary of the Feria de Nîmes.
