The Ministry of Health ensures that Galicia meets the criteria of the Ministry of Health to take the next steps in de-escalation, after the Government requested the autonomous communities to guarantee within a maximum period of five days a total of 1.5 and 2 ICU beds and between 37 and 40 acute patients beds per 10,000 inhabitants in case there was a re-outbreak of the coronavirus.

According to the Xunta, the provision of care resources and hospital capacity that is contemplated provides a capacity for be able to have 10,313 conventional hospital beds to care for Covid-19 patients. This ratio assumes that there would be 38.2 beds per 10,000 inhabitants, and 689 critical care beds, representing 2.55 critical care beds per 10,000 inhabitants.

Of the total number of conventional hospital beds for coronavirus, 8,149 correspond to the network of public centers of Sergas, 906 to the network of private centers and 1,258 with a hospital expansion corresponding to field hospitals that could be activated in five days.

Of the capacity for critics, the plan contemplates 554 beds in the public network and 135 in private centers.

In that statement, the Sergas ensures that the hospital care resources are higher than the minimum established in the ministerial order.

Criticisms of the opposition

The SERGAS statement comes after the opposition parties questioned that the Xunta have to use field hospitals to meet the criteria of the central government.

In this sense, the opposition parties denounce the cut in hospital beds in the last decade, assuring that in 2009 Galicia had a total of 9,863 beds available.
