Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra hands-on: two classes

Plastic versus Glass

The Note 20 has a plastic back. This has a slightly rough finish. I had the feeling that brushed aluminum was to be simulated. Even if it doesn’t feel “cheap”, it is still not the same good feeling as with the model from the previous year: the Note 10 had a glass back.

This year only the Ultra has the glass back. In direct comparison to the normal Note 20, it is noticeably smoother, but not quite as smooth as the Note 10. However, fingerprints deposited less quickly in the “Mystic Bronze” color on the test device.

The weight difference between Note 20 and Ultra was not large enough in hands-on to be booked as a plus for the Note 20. But the Note 20 has a thinner camera module. With the Ultra, it really sticks out of the case.

60 versus 120 Hertz

As with the Note 10 and Note 10+, the Ultra has a display with a higher resolution than the Note 20. But what is more relevant: the Ultra has a 120 Hertz display, for the Note 20 it is 60 Hertz. But that doesn’t speak for the Ultra, but rather for the Note 20: A smartphone that costs 949 euros and will appear in the second half of 2020 and still only has a 60 Hertz display is a no-go.

In comparison, the Ultra was more fluid when scrolling, but not all of the apps were shown with the 120 Hertz. The test of the series device will show whether the adaptive refresh rate (120 Hertz cannot be activated permanently) is really that picky or whether this is just a problem with the software of the pre-series device.
