Gais had a tough season in the Superettan, where they finally landed in 14th place. On Thursday night, Dalkurd, who finished second in one north, waited in the first qualifying meeting of two between the teams.
At a snowy Studenternas IP in Uppsala, it took only two minutes before the match was interrupted after Gais supporters lit smoke Bengals and threw bangers on the pitch, which obscured the view for the players out on the artificial turf.
When the match started again, it took until the 64th minute before the first goal came. Rassa Rahmani then gave Dalkurd the lead with 1-0 when August Wängberg threw himself in vain and tried to save on the goal line.
Gais equalized to 1-1 after a real dream hit signed Jonas Lindberg, who got the ball out to the left and pulled to. The ball flew all the way into the far cross. Just then, the Gothenburgers went towards a good result before returning home to Gamla Ullevi on Sunday. However, the match would get one more goal – in the wrong cage.
When the clock ticked up to 90 minutes, Dalkurd hit the ball from the right. Gais goalkeeper Mathias Karlsson pushed the ball straight at Wängberg who did not have time to move. The ball ended up in the net, Dalkurd won 2-1 and has thus gained a small advantage before the return meeting.
The last season that Gais did not belong to Swedish elite football (Allsvenskan or Superettan) was in 2003, when they managed to qualify for the then division 2.
