The Italian brand Gucci recently celebrated its centenary. That’s quite an achievement in itself, but the brand mentioned in more than 22,000 songs once again proves its prestige in fashion. The film ‘House of Gucci’, starring Lady Gaga, only appeared in cinemas last week, yet a huge increase in sales of the brand’s items has already been noted. Especially when it comes to selling second-hand items.

Gaga for Gucci
Second-hand platform Wethrift saw a 270 percent increase in searches for vintage pieces from the Italian luxury brand. Other US platforms also saw an increase, such as Open for Vintage, Vestiaire Collective, Rewind Vintage and Farfetch. The latter even saw a 1,500 percent growth in the number of people searching for vintage Gucci, according to Vice ID.

Lady Gaga certainly has something to do with that. The pop star with 50 million followers on Instagram plays the wife of Maurizio Gucci in the film, Patrizia Reggiani. Janty Yates, who is responsible for the costumes in the film, estimates that for Gaga alone, about 75 to 100 Gucci outfits were used in the filming. Enough material for inspiration, then.

More and more second-hand
The increase is currently only occurring in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Denmark, Hong Kong and Singapore, but it will not be long before Belgium follows. In fact, we Belgians are frontrunners when it comes to buying second-hand clothes, if you compare it with the rest of Europe. This is apparent from research by e-commerce player Veepee among 6,000 people, including 600 Belgians. 59 percent of Belgians buy second-hand, compared to the European average of 40 percent. 75 percent do so for economic reasons and 59 percent to reduce their carbon footprint.

It also appears that enthusiasts of second-hand items mainly use specialized applications and websites, such as Vinted or Vestiaire Collective, and marketplaces. Only 32 percent of buyers still go to a real second-hand store.
