After two months of a pandemic, Gabriela Gómez was on her way to her quesadilla stall this Friday when she had the bad luck to cross paths among 30 hitmen of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the armored vehicle of Omar García Harfuch, one of the most threatened men in Mexico. At 6.35 he was just entering a city still in darkness when 15 minutes from the Auditorium subway, where every day they placed their stove, the white Aveo in which he traveled was caught in the crossfire of hundreds of bullets.
Two hours later, Claudia Sheinbaum, head of the Government of Mexico City, confirmed that three people died in the attack that has shocked the country: two escorts from the police chief and Gabriela Gómez. According to her family’s version, the victim was in the car with her husband José García, her cousin, Tania Sandoval, and her sister-in-law, Betsaida García, who also helped with the kitchen. Gabriela, 26, was shot in the head and Tania recovers in a hospital with a shot in the hand. “We were merchants,” Gabriela’s brother said as he wandered around disoriented by the cordoned off scene.
“Right now I want to know about my sister. I only ask God that those people who were at fault, that God take care of that, ”said Rosa Gómez, Tanya’s sister, injured by a hand. Rosa attended to journalists still shocked and recalled that for ten years her sister went the same way every day to sell food on the street. With this she supported two daughters, three and nine years old.
The entire family had arrived from El Potrero, a small town of indigenous origin of 600 inhabitants, one hour from the elegant Paseo de la Reforma avenue, where the attack took place. This Friday was his first day of work, after two months of pandemic fully obeying the “stay home” order, when the confrontation took place between the Jalisco Cartel hitmen, armed to the teeth, and the bodyguards of the official who managed to save his life thanks to the armor.
Once Gabriela’s death was confirmed, her family members’ concern was to find the body as soon as possible to transport it to their town. “We are Christians and our religion does not allow us to incinerate, so we ask that you give us your whole body. We need financial support, we are low-income and we have nothing. Neither dad nor mom. We are alone ”, Rosa related to The universal. According to the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office, 12 people have been detained so far by the attack.
With tears in her eyes, Rosa asked the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, to support them financially because they have not worked for many weeks and do not have the resources even for the funeral. The relatives continued for hours from the sidewalk the expert works crying with the mask on. They obeyed the health instructions but no one warned them of the virus of violence.
