HOUSTON, Texas. – Gabriela Cruz and Marcos Cortez, both 19, were arrested and are being charged with murder for the death of Selvin Pereira, 27, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

On June 20 around 1:30 am, officers responded to a call about a man who was injured in the middle of the street. When officers arrived, they found Pereira with a gunshot wound between Westheimer Parkway and Fall Branch in Katy, Texas.

Although Pereira was taken to a hospital, hours later he died. Detectives identified him and contacted the Consulate General of El Salvador in Houston, who contacted the victim’s family, including his mother, who live in the Central American country.

After a month of investigation, agents from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged Cruz and Cortez with murder. They are both Salvadorans and bail was set for one million dollars.

The defendants wanted to rob Pereira but then shot him killing him, according to the police report. The case continues to be investigated and the Fort Bend County Prosecutor’s Office may elevate the charges to murder with the possibility of capital punishment.
