G20 countries agree to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees

This is reported by news agencies AFP and Bloomberg. They have seen the preliminary version of a joint statement.

According to media that have seen the statement, the document does not contain enough concrete measures to achieve that goal.

Average temperature rise

The leaders of the G20 countries approved a text that goes beyond what was agreed at the 2015 climate conference. The countries then agreed to limit the increase in the average temperature on the planet to well over the end of the century. below 2 degrees, preferably up to 1.5 degrees at the most.

This is the G20

From G20 consists of the nineteen richest countries in the world and the European Union. These are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and thus the European Union.

Together, this group of countries accounts for about 85 percent of the total world economy and 75 percent of world trade. The G20 is also responsible for the emission of an estimated 80 percent of all greenhouse gases in the world.

It is now agreed that the temperature should really not rise above 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Yet organizations of climate activists are critical. They have already let it be known that they find the statement insufficient due to the lack of concrete goals.

For example, no specific reference is made to 2050 as the year in which human CO2 emissions must be reduced to zero, reports the American news agency Bloomberg.

coal-fired power stations

The countries of the G20 have also agreed that the financing of the dirtiest kind of coal-fired power stations abroad will stop completely. All those investments must stop at the end of this year, the statement says.

But also no target date would be mentioned in the statement for the termination of electricity generation from coal.

Climate Summit in Glasgow

At the UN conference, which will last until 12 November, the countries will discuss, among other things, the options for limiting global warming. The fair distribution of the bill for climate change, the phasing out of coal, nature conservation and the elaboration of all kinds of rules resulting from the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement are also important topics.
