“Futurama” Returns: The Cult Classic Series Makes a Comeback on Disney Plus after a Decade

The return of the series “Futurama” after ten years via “Disney Plus”

Tomorrow, Monday, will return via the Disney Plus platform, the “Futurama” series, which was written by Matt Groening, the creator of the famous “The Simpsons” series, after stopping its showing for ten years, at a stage when digital platforms are witnessing successes related to films and animated series for adults.

Released in 1999, “Futurama” follows the adventures of Fry, a New York pizza delivery man who was frozen on New Year’s Eve 2000 only to wake up a thousand years later, in a world populated by robots and aliens with a satire on the failures of the 21st century.

In the ten new episodes that will be shown on a weekly basis, Fry, Leela, Bender and the various characters of the series confront the pandemic and the negatives of what is known as “binge watching” (excessive viewing of certain entertainment or media content) and the volatility of the digital currency Bitcoin.

In an interview reported by Disney, John DiMaggio, who voices Bender in the original version of the series, said, “Work writers always manage to keep up with current events, kind of like The Simpsons.”

“Futurama” was not shown for a record time, similar to “The Simpsons”, despite the success it achieved at the level of critics and audiences.

And the American Fox station stopped showing the series in 2003 after broadcasting four seasons of it, then it was shown again in the form of movies via “DVD”, then on the “Comedy Channel”, before it was stopped broadcasting again in 2013.

In February 2022, Hulu, the Disney subsidiary that holds the rights to broadcast the series in the United States, announced the rerun of “Futurama” after a long hiatus.
