The Freiburg canton police blocked a street last Monday because suspicious objects were found in an empty residential building. Now the federal prosecutor’s office was turned on.

The detonation was clearly perceived from afar, as the Friborg canton police announced on Wednesday evening. The objects were found during a search of the house interior and the surrounding area. They would have had the visual characteristics of non-conventional explosives or incendiary devices. However, the majority of the newly found objects were dummies. The remaining part will be analyzed further.

The neighbors near the house, around ten people, were asked to leave their homes during the “delicate phases of the intervention”. Nobody was injured and the population was not in danger.

According to the announcement, the object found on Monday was a metal box to which a remote control was connected and contained various items such as electrical cables, gas canisters and white matter. The elements have been neutralized. The analysis of the material by the Forensic Institute Zurich showed that it was not an explosive or flammable substance.

The Freiburg canton police are conducting further investigations to determine the profile and motive of the alleged perpetrator. She also turned on the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (BA). The BA announced on Wednesday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency that she had been pre-informed by the Freiburg authorities due to her responsibility for explosives offenses. The corresponding investigation was initiated by the Friborg canton police.

Construction workers discovered the first suspicious package on Monday in a house that had been vacant since the owner’s death last year. During the inspection of the apartment building, other suspicious objects were discovered. Five neighbors had subsequently left their place of residence temporarily on their own initiative for security reasons. The affected street, which borders the residential building, was closed for hours.

The objects found had been neutralized by a special unit of the Vaud Canton police. The special unit is the so-called EOD unit for neutralization, removal and detection of explosive devices.

In June, a suspicious package was also found in Léchelles FR, which triggered a large police operation. A connection to this case can currently not be made, writes the canton police on Wednesday evening.
