The Fürnbach church tower had been largely renovated in-house over the past few weeks. In a prayer service on Friday afternoon, the restored tower cross was blessed and, together with contemporary witnesses, reassembled on the top.
The bells of the Fürnbach church rang for the service at 4 p.m. on Friday. But whoever looked up to the church tower had a rare sight: The cross on the top was missing. For five weeks it was not in the usual place. Because the steeple cross and the steeple itself had to be renewed urgently.
Construction of the Church of All Saints in Fürnbach dates from 1711. It was expanded in 1960 and the tower was built two years later. The tower cross, which was getting on in years, was completely rusted and the sound grids of the tower were broken. At that time the simple cross was attached to the roof of the tower together with an egg-shaped bracket, which had been provisionally welded together from individual pieces of metal. This elongated metal structure, on which the cross had been attached for decades, reminded the Mesner Siegfried Nüßlein today more of a “burst coffee bean”. as on a ball and will serve as a memorial in the cemetery in the future.

The current assembly should not go as unnoticed as it did 58 years ago, but this time it should be solemn and dignified ?? even if by Corona only on a small scale. At a blessing ceremony, the renovated cross together with the new gilded ball should be fitted with contemporary witnesses in front of the locals and put back on the top.
A “finger to the sky”
With musical support from the ?? Steigerwaldklänge Fürnbach ?? four Fürnbachers, who were involved in the renovation work, carried the repaired and gilded church tower cross and the associated ball on a support frame to the village square in front of the church. Pastor Kurt Wolf opened the church service outdoors. He spoke of the cross and the tower, which stand “like a blessing on us and as a finger to heaven and God”.
A short time later, the parish minister Siegfried Nüßlein filled a copper capsule, which is to remain in the ball until the next restoration, with various contemporary documents: in addition to the current monetary currency, the daily edition of a local newspaper, the Sunday newspaper, the parish newspaper, a photo and the song sheet for the service he also kind of chronicle into it. The handwritten document outlines the history of the village, the church and its members.

Pastor Wolf blessed the cross and ball and addressed a heartfelt thank you to Nüßlein. It was only thanks to his persistence, among other things in communication with the Diocese of Würzburg, that Pastor Wolf said that this repair had taken place. Because only through falling parts of the sound grille did the diocese recognize the need for the renovation work and the partial renovation as a ?? emergency construction measure ?? classified. It announced a grant of 20 percent. With the answer from Würzburg ?? that only the bare minimum can be renewed ?? but Nüßlein was not satisfied.
The Fürnbacher himself
The Fürnbachers then took the initiative themselves: With the exception of the tower cross restoration and, like in 1962, the renovation work, the renovation work was carried out on a voluntary basis. There was therefore a call for donations for funding. Many thanks therefore to the sponsors and all helpers, including Wolfgang and Siegfried Nüßlein, Harald Aumüller, Walter Schug, Alexander Schneider and Richard Klug, who all contributed significantly to the renovation. And the municipality of Rauhenebrach had also made a ten percent grant.

Nüßlein was particularly pleased with the result of the restoration: The size and the shine of the renovated 2.10 meter high cross are overwhelming; Such a possibility to see the cross up close was unique to him. “We are all contemporary witnesses,” he reminded the audience. And the Fürnbachers were also certain: such a historic event should not be missed.
Employees of the Tröppner company carefully pulled the cross and ball together with the capsule after the blessing on the tower. And shortly after 5 p.m. the time had come: The tower cross shone in new splendor on the top. At the end of the prayer, Pastor Wolf donated the final blessing, the Te Deum resounded and the bells rang again.
The workers of the Tröppner company completed the fixing work at the top, while the spectators went down to the cozy part of the event below. And since the scaffolding was already in place, Mayor Matthias Bäuerlein and pastor Kurt Wolf also took the opportunity to climb the top of the church tower to look down on Fürnbach from a height of 16 meters.
Now the cross can look down on its village for at least another 50 years and adorn the tower of the church.
