Fukuyama considers the return of Kherson and ports on Azov to be realistic – tsn.ua

In the next few months, it will be difficult for the Ukrainian military to regain control of the Donbass. A realistic strategy is to focus on the south of the country, returning Kherson and the ports on the Sea of Azov.

So, by the end of summer it will be possible to see real progress in the south Ukraine.

American philosopher and political scientist Francis Fukuyama told in an interview with DW.

“Think that the most realistic strategy at this point is to focus on the south of the country, reopen access to the Black Sea for Ukraine, returning Kherson and ports on the Sea of Azov. This is more important than the Donbass. I think that the return of Donbass will be difficult to implement in the next few months,” the political scientist said.

He emphasized that it is very important for Ukraine to regain access to the Black Sea ports in order to resume the export of all its agricultural products, as well as break the blockade of Odessa.

Fukuyama is convinced that it is the liberation of Kherson and the lifting of the blockade of ports that will become a real prerequisite for the start of negotiations on a ceasefire.

“I imagine it this way, that this is what they (the Ukrainians – ed.) are going to focus on. They have already launched an offensive in the Kherson region and have made some progress there. If, say, by September or October, they really liberate this area, this will lay the groundwork for the start of serious ceasefire negotiations. But I don’t think that the Ukrainians will be able to achieve them before they open access to the outside world via the Black Sea,” the philosopher said.

Recall, according to analysts, Russian troops are leaving the operational pause in the Donbass, launching offensives north of Slavyansk, southeast of Seversk, around Bakhmut and southwest of Donetsk.
