Anthony Fuchi, the chief expert on infectious disease control in the United States, said he was still “cautiously optimistic” about scientists discovering an effective vaccine against the emerging coronavirus, despite potential problems.
“I still feel cautiously optimistic that we will have a candidate vaccine that offers some degree of efficacy, and we hope that the ratio is sufficient to stimulate some form of herd immunity and provide protection to the population as a whole,” Fauchi told US Senators.
Other government officials have described to Senators how plans are being developed to quickly deploy a vaccine, once it is available, through means including building supply chains even before the vaccine itself is discovered.
The officials also stated that they want to spread the vaccine among the population without expressing their firm commitment to ensuring its freeness.
