From the effects of HPV and contraceptives to vaccinations: everything you need to know about cervical cancer – we are examining with an expert

Long-term use of COCs increases the risk of developing cervical cancer, especially in the group of women with a positive test for human papillomavirus, however, after discontinuation of contraceptives, the risk of disease decreases after stopping contraceptives.

As a rule, women taking KOK often visit gynecologists and are more closely monitored. Perhaps this factor is also associated with a high degree of detection of cervical cancer in patients taking birth control pills and under the supervision of a doctor, and not with the harmful effects of contraceptives on the body.

How is diagnosed

Preventive examinations by a gynecologist and a screening system – cytology, colposcopy – can detect cervical cancer in the early stages when there are no obvious symptoms of the disease. Doctors use the clinical recommendations of the Ministry of Health in their work. However, the HPV test is not yet included in mandatory studies, unlike in European countries.

Can oncology be prevented

Today, doctors can exactly answer this yes question. HPV vaccination, which became possible several years ago, can prevent the appearance of cervical cancer. In the arsenal of doctors today there are three types of HPV vaccines: two-, four- and nine-valent. The latter is now being registered in the Russian market. When vaccinated, cross-immunity forms, which protects against most types of HPV.

Vaccination is indicated for girls and boys from 9 to 14 years old twice, with an interval of six months. Between the ages of 15 and 30, vaccination is also possible, but according to another schedule, three times. Given the quality of vaccines and the experience gained, at the last HPV congress in Sydney, the recommended age for vaccinations was increased to 50 years.
