Style In September it was ‘fashion month’ again: a month in which all well-known designers show their collections for the coming seasons in major world cities. The New York Fashion Week kicked off, followed by London and Milan. The saying goes: save the best for last. That’s why Paris is saved every year as a dessert, to end the fashion month with a bang. This year was no different. Take a look behind the scenes of Paris Fashion Week and discover which trends may soon be hanging in your wardrobe.
The pandemic may have thrown a spanner in the works, but fashion month has just continued. Different, but no less glamorous. On the catwalk we saw eccentric color explosions for a week, alternated with gloomy, dark outfits that reflect the atmosphere of recent months well. And there were some notable new trends too.
Big shoulders
Perhaps the biggest trend on fashion week was the ‘big shoulders’. Several major fashion houses, including Balenciaga, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Isabel Marant, put their shoulders to this new trend, originating from the 1930s. Then designers like the Italian used Elsa Schiaparelli shoulder pads and puff sleeves, so that women would feel confident and powerful. And that fashion statement is still relevant today. Some kept the puffy shoulders subtle, like Chanel. While Rick Owens and Patou, among others, went completely over the top.

‘Deconstruction’
Striking this edition of the Paris fashion week were dresses and blouses that look like a mixture of different garments. Inspired by the DIY movement, which has grown enormously in popularity since the global lockdown? Christopher Esber, Ellery, ROKH and co show us how to put scissors in your wardrobe, to transform your old clothes into something completely new. Be sure to notice the warrior-like armor the models wear. Not only big shoulders can therefore serve as a way to feel more empowered as a woman. That promises for next spring …

Go nuts
The fact that the corona crisis has influenced fashion enormously is once again clear here. Oversized, lanky outfits are all the rage, and will be for a while. We saw the same trend in the fashion weeks in New York, London and Milan. Wide trousers, oversized blazers and shirts in which you swim. Has fashion finally become a bit comfortable?

Translucent
It does have something: using your own skin color as an accessory. Fashion houses Givenchy, Dior and Giambattista were apparently also fans of it, because all three came with a see-through dress. Some examples provide a Cleopatra look and feel, while others look wonderfully dreamy, bohemian or just very cool.

Face covering
It should not be missing: creative alternatives to a mouth mask. Whether they are all equally safe is debatable, but they certainly look very special. Kenzo is at the forefront this year with its large, beekeeper-like nets. Rick Owens then brings a futuristic interpretation of the mouth mask. But the prize for the most special ‘mouth mask’ still goes to Paco Rabanne, who came to steal the show with a glittering golden rain.
