James Michael Tyler (59), known as bartender Gunther in Friends, has prostate cancer. The actor told the news himself in the American talk show Today. The disease was already diagnosed in September 2018. A year ago, the cancer mutated, leaving Tyler’s lower body paralyzed. The actor is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Due to his illness, Tyler was not physically present at the Friends-Reunion. “That was my own decision. I was very happy that they wanted to get me involved, but I also didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere.” The actor did make a short appearance via Zoom. He calls it a “bittersweet experience”.
