Frenchman Demar wins the fourth stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia

Frenchman Arno Demar (“Groupama-FDJ”) won the 11th stage of the multi-day competition “Giro d’Italia” on Wednesday, while the Portuguese leader Juan Shmeida from “Deceuninck – Quick Step” will still be wearing the pink leader’s shirt.

On Wednesday, 182 kilometers from Porto Sant’Elpidio to Rimini were completed by Demar, who was first in the group’s finish after four hours, three minutes and 52 seconds.

29-year-old Demar now has 75 victories in his career, including 14 this season.

He has become the first French driver since the 1982 Giro d’Italia winner, Bernard Ino, who has won four stages in one year, but together with one success in last year’s tour, Demar has won five stages in Italy.

Demar was ahead of Tuesday’s winner Peter Sagan of Slovakia (“Bora – hansgrohe”) and Colombian Alvaro Jose Hodeg (“Deceuninck – Quick Step”), while overall leader Almeida was ranked 22nd.

Almeida’s overall ranking is 34 seconds ahead of Sunweb’s Vilko Kelderman from the Netherlands and 43 seconds ahead of Spanish Peljo Bilbao (Bahrain – McLaren).

After leaving Porto Sant’Elpidio, five cyclists fled the large group, the last of whom – Sanders Arme from Belgium – was caught six kilometers before the finish.

Of the 218 registered cyclists, 144 continue the competition.

On Thursday, the race will continue with 204 kilometers in the Chesenatico area of the Italian hometown of cycling excellence, Marco Pantani, who died in 2004. Cyclists face five third and fourth category climbs.

The first four stages of the Italian tour were to take place in the vicinity of Budapest, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hungary refused to accept the stages that took place in Sicily. Also, due to the pandemic, the tour was postponed from May to October.

This year, none of the Latvians will start the “Giro d’Italia”, but last year Krists Neilands took part in the competition.
