The French ambassador to Niger, Sylvain Itté, has left the country. That’s what French authorities say. The decision comes a month after coup plotters in Niger demanded Itté leave. The French government previously decided not to cooperate, because they do not recognize the new leadership of the country.

Last weekend, French President Macron announced that France will leave Niger after all. Itté and other French diplomats could hardly do their work and were not allowed to leave the embassy by the coup plotters.

The remaining French soldiers will also be out of the country before the end of the year. The soldiers were in Niger to help fight jihadist groups. They were also no longer able to perform their duties due to opposition from the Nigerien military.

In July, a coup was staged in Niger against President Mohamed Bazoum. The coup plotters, led by General Tiani, turned against the old colonizer: France. They demanded that they leave the country as soon as possible. Since the coup, there have been daily demonstrations by citizens against France’s military presence in Niger.
