Frelo Bike Rental System: Evaluating Auggen’s Interest and Potential Locations as a Mobility Supplement to Public Transport

Would the Frelo bike rental system be interesting for Auggen as a mobility supplement to public transport? The local council dealt with this question. Possible locations were also discussed.

The public bicycle rental system Frelo has been operating in the Freiburg urban area since 2019. There are already stations outside of Freiburg that are financed by the relevant municipalities. The Frelo bicycle rental system is now to be put out to tender regionally and will start on January 1, 2026.

Municipalities in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district should express their interest in whether they want to take part, said building authority manager Bjrn Sum at the most recent municipal council meeting. Neuchâtel and Mllheim have already dealt with the issue. So far 30 municipalities are interested.

“At the moment, the expression of interest does not cost any money; funding opportunities are being examined by the ZRF (Special Association for Regio-Nahverkehr Freiburg), which is also in contact with the funding providers,” says Sum. The corresponding results from the test would be sent to the funding providers and the municipalities would then be informed about funding opportunities. They can then plan budget resources for the system.

The one-off investment costs per station are up to 10,000 euros. Auggen would have to provide the infrastructure. The Frelo company manages the stations. “If participation turns out to be too expensive, we can drop out,” said Auggen’s mayor Ulli Waldkirch.

The operating costs include the provision of bicycles or pedelecs as well as bicycle racks by the provider. Added to this are the ongoing costs for repairs, maintenance and service. As an example, a mixed calculation for the maintenance of three normal bikes and two Pedelecs was given, which could be around 7,000 euros net per year.

“Locations for rental bike stations would be the train station, the town hall and alternatively or additionally the Sonnberghalle,” said Waldkirch. The ” Sternen “, the very popular cult bar in the village, was also suggested for a rental bike station.

Waldkirch recommended taking part in the tender and planning two stations in town. Peter Danzeisen (CDU) and Michael Muser (FDP / Free Citizens List) also spoke out in favor of this. During the vote, the local council voted unanimously to take part in the tender process for a regional bicycle rental system.
