Freiburg: Wolfgang Jäger celebrates his 80th birthday – Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg congratulates its former rector

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Jäger, political scientist and former rector of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, will celebrate his 80th birthday on August 24, 2020. The university and the rectorate under the direction of Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer warmly congratulates him: “Wolfgang Jäger has set the course for the successful development of the university and, as rector with the longest term of office to date, has made great contributions to the University of Freiburg. We combine our thanks and our appreciation with best wishes for the future of his life, “says Schiewer.

Jäger was the rector of the University of Freiburg from 1995 to 2008. One of the greatest successes of his tenure was the admission of the University of Freiburg to the group of nine top German universities as part of the first round of the Excellence Initiative from 2007 to 2012. Another highlight was the celebration of the university’s 550th anniversary in 2007, at which José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, was a guest and Honorary Senator Prof. Dr. Thanks to a donation of one million euros, Horst Weitzmann and his wife laid the cornerstone of the New University Foundation (NUS). The milestones also include the establishment of the technical faculty, the erection of a memorial for the victims of National Socialism in Kollegiengebäude (KG) I, the opening of the Uniseum, the founding of the International Graduate Academy (IGA) and extensive structural renovations, such as the large lecture halls in KG I, the Audimax and the Peterhofkeller.

Jäger has received numerous awards and honors for his services. He is “Chevalier dans l’ordre des Palmes Académiques”, one of the highest awards in France for services to the French education system. In addition, he received the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class. The Pope awarded him the Order of Gregory, the European Cultural Foundation honored Jäger with the European Science and Culture Prize. In 2015 he received the Walter Eucken Medal for his many years of support for the Walter Eucken Institute. Jäger holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Grigore T. Popa Iasi / Romania, the University of Montréal / Canada and the University of Buenos Aires / Argentina. The state parliament has elected him four times for nine years each time as judge at the Constitutional Court of Baden-Württemberg, to which Jäger has been a member since 1988. He is also an honorary citizen of Freiburg im Breisgau and the Romanian city of Iasi.

Wolfgang Jäger comes from Niedereschach in the Black Forest. He studied political science, history and classical philology in Munich, Freiburg and London / England. From 1974 until his retirement in 2008 he held the professorship for Comparative Government Studies at the University of Freiburg. In the course of his career he turned down offers to the universities of Cologne, Tübingen and Mainz. His research interests include party research, media and politics, the history and political system of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the political system of the USA.
