Freiburg: Six farms in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district have the best areas – meadow championship award ceremony

After an expert jury selected farmland in the summer
Southern Black Forest, the award ceremony of the meadow masters took place on 29 November 2022 at the Schwarzwaldmilch dairy in Freiburg.

Six farms from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district currently have every reason to be happy: This year they chose the award from 19 nominees
most of the meadows rich in species and used for agriculture. The winners received a meadow championship badge, vouchers from nature park managers,
book prizes and gifts of Black Forest milk. The best among them, Michael Rombach from Breitnau and Egon Faller from Eisenbach-Schollach, both took victory in the categories “Species-rich open pastures” and “Species-rich agricultural pastures”.
For this they received hand-made cowbells with an individual inscription, which the Schwarzwaldmilch donated. Both farmers didn’t expect to win, but are more than happy with the result. “Since this pasture has been extensively farmed for 40 years and is home to, among other things, a rare species of orchid, I wanted to know what the state of the
area is evaluated. I am very happy with the result,” said organic farmer Egon Faller from Eisenbach-Schollach.

Under the leadership of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park e. V. and in cooperation with the Baden Agricultural Association (BLHV), the 9th meadow championship took place in 2022
instead of. This competition rewards meadows and pastures that are not only valuable from an ecological and botanical point of view, but also suitable for agricultural use
suit. In addition to plant biodiversity and ecological potential, forage yield and forage quality for livestock are also assessed. This year, particular attention was paid to mountain farmers who deliver their raw milk to Schwarzwaldmilch GmbH Freiburg.

A preselection took place in advance, in which the best areas were selected and then examined and evaluated by a specialized jury. This jury was made up of experts
in the fields of agriculture and ecology/nature conservation. In addition to the “inventor” of the lawn championship, Dr. Rainer Oppermann from the Institute for Agroecology and Biodiversity and his colleague Johannes Mangerich were also Oswald Tröndle from the BLHV, Geo Galbusera from the Agricultural Office Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Andreas Hummel from Schwarzwaldmilch and Holger Wegner from the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and . V. included. On 31 May the judging panel inspected the best areas and determined six winners in the categories ‘Species-rich agricultural pastures’ and ‘Species-rich open pastures’.

The award ceremony took place on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at the Schwarzwaldmilch GmbH dairy in Freiburg, which was the cooperation partner of the Meadow Championship this year. Nature park director Roland Schöttle delivered together with
Heinz Kaiser, Head of Agriculture/Production/Logistics at Schwarzwaldmilch GmbHFreiburg, the prices.
Heinz Kaiser presented key company data and pointed to the fact that the vast majority of farmers deal intensively with issues of sustainability, nature conservation and climate protection and that their work should find much more public interest. Roland Schöttle reiterated this: “The talks at the last world climate conference are important, but the implementation on the ground is more essential: energetic people who care for the general public in the region. For us, therefore, it is a question of representing these services and arousing the public’s interest in them”.
The Black Forest is already at the forefront when it comes to these issues.” According to Tröndle, it would be gratifying if a format like the lawn championship was also popular at the state level. All three speakers thanked the participating farmers for their valuable work in cultivating the meadows and pastures in the Southern Black Forest.
