Freiburg: Ice hockey: Wolves also score in the 16th game in a row – EHC Freiburg wins away game in Ravensburg 4: 3 after a penalty shootout

The EHC had not gone out of a game without a point since January 29th – and this series was upheld by the Wolves today! The EHC heart had already got used to nerve-wracking comebacks in this series, which now lasted 16 (!) Games – and today it was that time again: 1:25 was still on the clock when Christian Billich, after a clever time-out from Peter Russell Game balanced.

After leading 1: 0 and 2: 1, the EHC finally had to make up a 2: 3 deficit, which was followed by a face-off in the offensive third in the 59th minute. After a goalless extension, the fourth duel between Freiburg and Ravensburg this season went into penalty shoot-out – as in two of the three previous shootouts between Wolves and Towerstars, the EHC retained the upper hand and thus went back to Breisgau with two points .

the initial situation
The duel between Freiburg and Ravensburg would have been one of the quarter-finals of the DEL2 playoffs last season if this phase of the season had not fallen victim to the corona pandemic – and this is exactly the situation the two teams would have found themselves in due to their table situation before today’s game if the playoffs had already started.

While EHC Freiburg was 15 points ahead of the Ravensburg Towerstars before the game, the previous three encounters – as already mentioned – had always created tension. Today’s duel between the current second and the current seventh in the table should follow this trend.

The Freiburg constellation
Today Enrico Salvarani got a job in goal for EHC Freiburg and gave Ben Meisner a break. Nikolas Linsenmaier was still missing from the field players and the contingent player Evan Mosey, who was still surplus on Friday, replaced Cam Spiro in the nominally second row today. Otherwise, Peter Russell let the same strikers and defenders appear as on Friday.

The game
A balanced start brought the EHC its first power play in the 8th minute. This was able to establish itself well in the second excess minute, but not achieve any countable success. Chances arose in the following minutes – and that on the right wing: A slap shot by Evan Mosey (11th) and a dangerous cross pass by Luca Trinkberger (12th) let the EHC scratch the lead.

But also on the other side of the ice the first goal of the game seemed to be in the air in the meantime – in the 13th minute the crossbar was saved and a save with the trowel of his stick by Enrico Salvarani left the game goalless in his first Take a break.

At the beginning of the second period, however, the first hit was not long in coming – it should belong to the EHC when Evan Mosey pushed the puck towards the Ravensburger Tor near the gang in the 22nd minute. This apparently harmless situation resulted in a ricochet, which Chad Bassen netted to make it 1-0 for the Wolves (22nd minute).

The first outnumbered game for the hosts that followed shortly after came to an end after eleven seconds when the Towerstars had to send a player to the penalty bench. Towards the end of this four-on-four Salvarani had to defuse a big chance when he suddenly saw the free-standing defender Maximilian Kolb in front of him after the Wolves had lost a target in their own third (25th). Immediately after this phase, the Freiburg goalkeeper was powerless when the Towerstars used a three-on-three counterattack to equalize (1: 1, 26th).

When the disc found its way into the Ravensburger Tor a second time only a few minutes later, the Freiburg jubilation was only brief, as the game had already ended in a confusing situation in the Ravensburger goal area. But then Scott Allen made for countable success, who in the form of a solo effort almost exactly in the middle of the game gave the EHC a second lead (1: 2, 31st).

This 2: 1 from Freiburg’s point of view should also represent the status after the second third – even though both teams had the chance to change the score perhaps in a groundbreaking way: Oleg Tschwanow would have almost got a two-goal lead with a single shot for the EHC (33rd) and on the other hand it was important for the wolves to avert the possible equalizer of the Towerstars in their first full power play (after the first lasted only eleven seconds) (38th-40th).

The EHC was faced with such an outnumbered situation right at the beginning of the last third when the whistle of one of the referees rang out after nine seconds. The EHC survived this again, but had to admit defeat to the Ravensburger, who were now playing bitingly, in the form of a dry slap shot by James Bettauer – 15 minutes before the end the game was equal again.

However, this score should only last for just under two minutes – after hard physical work in the Freiburg third, Vincenz Mayer could be staged by the hosts, who now brought Ravensburg into the lead for the first time (3: 2, 47th).

Accordingly, the wolves had to go vehemently on the offensive. This seemed to have found its decisive impulse in a break from Peter Russell: When the EHC had a face-off in front of the Ravensburger Tor a good one and a half minutes before the end of the game, Russell called his men over and sent them with an empty goal and an additional one Field player back on the ice – with the result of a picture-perfect hit: After winning the face-off, the target circulated over two stations along the blue line and was finally used by Christian Billich to equalize in front of the opposing goal (3: 3, 59.) . The EHC had made its next comeback – in what was now, believe it or not, the 16th game in a row, a point win was guaranteed.

After a goalless overtime in which the EHC had to survive a shortfall, the two teams faced each other for the fourth time this season in a shootout. This ended – in a rather untypical way – with a total of five goals and six shots. Enrico Salvarani’s parade against the second Ravensburger shooter secured a second point for the EHC.
