Frankfurt – At the end of 2021, the major renovation on Kaiserleikreisel be finished at Frankfurt. The roundabout then becomes a double intersection under the A 661 motorway have become. Offenbach has been building at the traffic junction between Frankfurt and Offenbach for years. “The idea is to control traffic coming from the motorway differently than direct traffic between cities,” said Kerstin Holzheimer, spokeswoman for the city of Offenbach.

As of next week, the asphalting will start on the two bridges with the new ramps. These ramps will lead to and from in the future A 661 at the Kaiserlei. Work is also currently underway on the northern ramps to and from the Kaiserleibrücke. After the renovation of the east side there is now direction on the west side Frankfurt crafted.

Kaiserlei conversion to prevent traffic jams between Frankfurt and Offenbach

Can be used new Kaiserlei ramps but not afterwards. The last piece, the last ten meters, to the Strahlbergerstrasse is still missing. In future, traffic that has a connection to the motorway – that is, from the A 661
towards Frankfurt or Offenbach. The direct connection between the two cities is via the Kaiserleipromenade. The hope is to reduce congestion.

From Frankfurt’s point of view, these are the two directions of travel of Gerbermühlstraße. The northern route – closer to the Main – was the direction of travel from Offenbach to Frankfurt, the southern led in the opposite direction. This already flows into the Kaiserpromenade. The northern road, on the other hand – in Offenbach district it is called Strahlberger – is currently also being paved.

“That was delayed,” says Holzheimer, “because we are old Asbestos pipes found that we had to replace. “So the utilities initially laid their new lines underground, now the roadway is being prepared.

Frankfurt and Offenbach: Kaiserlei is a traffic hub for commuters

The cost is expected to be 41 million euros. The neighboring city pays almost five million euros Offenbach, 8.7 million pays Frankfurt. The state and the federal government also contribute.

The Kaiserlei is an important connection for both cities. Alone 17,400 commuters drive daily from Offenbach to Frankfurt and about 5500 in the opposite direction. That is why Frankfurt is also involved in upgrading the traffic infrastructure in the neighboring city – after all, Frankfurt has identified industrial areas on the Frankfurt side, on which, among other things, Mercedes has built and one Multi-function hall could be built. Also Offenbach will expand the business park there. Numerous companies have already shown interest.

Kaiserlei: Work of the city of Frankfurt begins

At the motorway bridge itself, the Kaiserleibrücke over the Main, work of theCity of Frankfurt. Because the bridge is also used by pedestrians and cyclists. The pedestrian and cycle path on the Frankfurt side of the bridge, which was inaugurated in 1964, is now in poor condition and is therefore getting a new covering. The construction site is currently being set up.

“It is no longer worth repairing individual areas. That is why we are now tackling the entire footpath and bike path at the bridge and are investing around 400,000 euros,” says Michaela Kraft, head of the Office for Road Construction and Development (ASE). The construction work is expected to be completed by the end of August 2020.

Pedestrian and bike path blocked on one side

Until then, the path on the Frankfurt side is closed to pedestrians and cyclists from the stairs on Franziusstrasse to the Kaiserleikreisel in Offenbach.

The sidewalk on the Offenbacher bridge side remains open. A detour for pedestrians and cyclists from Hanauer Landstrasse is already signposted at the Ratsweg roundabout.
