BERGAMO – «Living without freedom» begins the writing on the wall, from which the rest of the old League’s slogan has been peeled off. But the sign of the restaurant “Il Carroccio” is clearly visible next to the gate. And it is just behind that long yellow wall that Franco Colleoni, 68, provincial secretary of the Northern League of Bergamo for five years, was murdered yesterday morning with violent blows to the head and face. A crime for which there still seems to be no certain lead, so much so that in the late evening the carabinieri were still listening to Colleoni’s family, friends and acquaintances to understand what it may have been to arm the killer’s hand. Even if the fury with which the murderer raged on the victim may suggest that a motive of a personal nature, to someone who harbored serious reasons for resentment then exploded in the attack.

The carreer
In Dalmine, a municipality of which he had also been councilor, Colleoni had for twenty-six years the owner of the restaurant “Il Carroccio”, a place covered with posters and symbols of Umberto Bossi’s party. He himself, who joined in 1988 in what was still the Lombard League, even before becoming number one of the provincial party between 1999 and 2004, was someone who answered on the phone saying not “Hello” but “Free Padania”. And he had left the party when he had seen it move away from his original positions.

The family
The restaurant is on the ground floor of a renovated farmhouse where his home is located on the upper floor. But in which there is also that of the ex-wife Tiziana Ferrari from whom Colleoni was separated for some time but with whom he had remained on good terms and that of one of the two sons, Francesco. It was he who opened the gate that leads to the court from the street at 11.30 yesterday. And at the end of the path leading to the restaurant he found his father’s lifeless body on the ground, with his head and face smashed by several blows from a blunt instrument. The man notified 112 and then his mother and brother Federico who lives in the same street.

The mode
According to initial evidence Franco Colleoni had been dead for a few hours and the killer may have used one of the garden tools kept in that part of the courtyard, some of which were found stained with blood. They have all been found, but an autopsy will be needed to see if the murder weapon is among them. During the first inspections, the Carabinieri of the Operational Unit of Bergamo and of the Compagnia di Treviglio then found Colleoni’s house turned upside down, and for this reason one of the first hypotheses was that the victim might have surprised some fleeing thieves, who they would then react violently.

The hypothesis
But it was precisely the manner of the attack that made this track lose importance, together with the fact that none of the neighbors saw or heard anything. It is therefore thought that to unleash the killer was something related to the personal life of Franco Colleoni. In the meantime, the images of all the municipal cameras have been requisitioned to see if anyone has frequently wandered around the «Carroccio» area. As pointed out in the Prosecutor’s Office, all the tracks are still open.
