Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland has received 4 top clinical recognitions from the association of Collaborating Top Clinical Training Hospitals (STZ). The 2 expertise centers ‘asthma, COPD, allergy & occupational lung diseases’ and ‘IBD (chronic intestinal inflammation) in adults and children’ received the STZ recognition for the 3rd and 2nd time respectively. New are the two top clinical recognitions for the specialty Abdominal Wall Surgery and the Rotterdam Dizziness Center. The dizziness center is located in the Franciscus Willemsplein outpatient clinic location, where we collaborate with specialists from the top clinical Maasstad Hospital. Franciscus currently has 8 STZ expertise centres, and the intention is to further expand this in the coming years.
The aim of expertise centers, in addition to multidisciplinary care for the patient, is to innovate and contribute to improving the quality of care. Highly specialized care is also called ‘top clinical care’. In order to provide this top clinical care now and in the future, a lot of attention is paid to training, scientific research and healthcare innovation. The in-house knowledge is passed on to doctors and nurses in training. In addition, Franciscus has a large number of medical and nursing further education courses and its own training offering.

In 2008, Franciscus joined the association of Collaborating Top Clinical Training Hospitals (STZ) and shortly afterwards the hospital received STZ recognition for the Asthma, COPD & Allergy expertise center. Pulmonologist Jasper Kappen: ‘For years we have been there for people with severe asthma, COPD and allergies, for all generations. Now we can also offer top clinical care to anyone with lung complaints due to work.’ Gastroenterologist Rachel West: ‘I am very happy that the STZ recognition of our IBD center has been extended. Our goal is to provide even better IBD care in our hospital for patients of all ages, our focus is not on treating the disease but on the patient.’ Surgeon Marijn Poelman: ‘We are proud and happy that the good care we provide for the often forgotten group of patients with a (complex) abdominal wall hernia has now also been rewarded with the STZ quality mark.’ ENT doctor Willem Kelders: ‘We are very happy with the unique collaboration with the neurologists at Maasstad Hospital, with whom we have jointly received the top clinical designation.’ In addition to these recognitions, Franciscus also offers top clinical care for obesity, breast cancer, gastrointestinal ischemia and neonatal respiratory problems and infections.
