France Ranks Fourth in Deaths Compared to European Neighbors: Why is it the ‘Champion’ of Work Accidents?

The country ranks fourth in terms of the number of deaths compared to its European neighbors. A poor ranking linked to several factors.

Why is France considered the European “champion” of work accidents? The “Stop Death at Work” Collective, which campaigns for victims of fatal accidents and their families, could have the answer.

In Saint-Colomban, Pierrick Duchêne, Claudine’s husband, was tragically crushed by a machine while he was working. It was supposed to be the start of his Christmas vacation, but he received a last-minute call to do some maintenance. He never returned home. Claudine affirms that “dying at work in France is not done. However, there are two deaths per day.”

This is what Matthieu Lépine has been studying for five years. On his “X” account he highlights daily deaths resulting from work accidents. “We have fewer and fewer labor inspectors. Today, there is one inspector for more than 10,000 employees,” Matthieu told Euronews.

In Auchy les Mines, Rémy Bellois hits the road. He is a labor inspector and his mission is to visit stores, construction sites and various companies to ensure compliance with safety regulations. He believes that “we could consider that the sanctions are relatively light. The criminal cost of a death is €10,000 maximum per employee.” Frédéric Soulier, from Metz, knows this too well. In 2012, while working as a rope access worker in a sugar silo, he survived an accident in which two of his colleagues lost their lives. “People who work, in general, it is to earn money, it is not to lose their lives,” he declares as he continues to demand Justice.

Forced paces, a lack of sanction, a lack of control… The reasons for this situation are undoubtedly multiple. But, in the meantime, the victims and their families have decided to come together.
