Against the backdrop of yet another confrontation on Saturday, where one team broke through the opposing defense for the entire game, the encounter between the two Mundial favorites proved to be a success. Both France and England showed football of such a level that the final whistle shocked the aesthetes to some extent – you want to watch such a match endlessly.
The French side opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Tchaumeni unexpectedly fired from 26 meters into the bottom corner of the Pickford goal. But the conceded ball, it seems, only provoked the British, who, without wasting time, went ahead in large numbers. In several episodes, the French were saved by Lloris, who repulsed, in particular, two dangerous shots from Kane. This duel became pivotal and continued after the break.
The English equalized in the 54th minute. Tchuameni himself beat Sac in the penalty area, and the referee pointed to the spot. The duel between two Tottenham players – Lloris and Kane – was won by the striker.
The goal has given Gareth Southgate’s wards strength and confidence. For about a quarter of an hour, the British continued to attack sharply and create chances. How much is even Maguire’s shot after a set piece worth? But France, having waited, used their chance for the second time to come forward. In the 78th minute, after a corner kick, Giroud scored.
Within six minutes, the England team could equalize for the second time. A second penalty was awarded to the French doors, which Gary Kane again undertook to break through. But this time he exaggerated and sent the ball into the stands with a strong blow.
Taking into account stoppage time, the English also had more than 15 minutes to still transfer the match to extra time. The last chance was wasted by Rashford, who scored from a free-kick next to the nine. Seconds later, the referee gave the final whistle. England have once again bid farewell to their title dream, while France will face Morocco in the semi-final.
