France is calling on fellow countrymen and companies to temporarily leave Pakistan

The French embassy in Pakistan has called on fellow countrymen to leave the country temporarily. French companies have also been advised to cease activities for the time being, reports AFP news agency. The reason is the “serious threat” posed by violent anti-French protests in the country. On the website of the embassy is in an opinion that ‘French interests in Pakistan’ are under serious threat.

Islamic extremists from the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party are protesting against France because President Macron has stood up for the right of a French magazine to publish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. Depicting the prophet is prohibited in Islam. Protesters already partially blocked Pakistan’s two largest cities and the capital Islamabad earlier this week to demand the expulsion of the French ambassador. The police are violently repressing the protests. At least two police officers were killed.

The leader of TLP was arrested on Monday. The Pakistani government has announced that it will want to ban. In 2018, the TLP following went into the street to argue against the cartoon competition of PVV leader Geert Wilders.
