To improve the lives of young people and to stimulate the cultural sector, all French people aged 18 years receive a credit of 300 euros. The amount can be spent on books, music, cinemas, concerts, museums and even video games. The condition is that it concerns French culture. The money cannot be spent on, for example, American streaming services such as Netflix, but on, for example, Canal +. About 800,000 young people per year can install an app in which the credit is stored. President Macron announced the measure through TikTok.

A trial with the credit in 14 regions turned out to be a success. Three quarters of the 164,000 subjects used it at least once. Sixty percent of the budget turned out to be spent on books, 12 percent was spent on music and ten percent of the money was spent on film. Incidentally, books may only be bought from real bookstores and not from web shops without physical branches.

The plan was already an election promise by Macron in 2017 but is now seen as an impetus for the cultural sector that has been hit hard by the corona crisis. This week, the sector may reopen after a six-month lockdown.
