The Paulista Championship is prevented from being played in São Paulo by decree of the state government, which suspended all sporting events from March 15 to 30 as one of the measures to try to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, at its most critical moment in the country. .

The FPF tried, more than once, to convince Governor João Doria to keep the tournament matches. There were meetings with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, guarantor of the government’s decision, but the arguments were not accepted. The Federation, in a statement, said the government was acting against medical and scientific evidence by paralyzing football.

Faced with the ban, the first option was to look for stadiums in other states that could host the games. There was a nod to Rio de Janeiro, which refused, and to Minas Gerais. In MG, negotiations moved to the point where the Federation scored São Bento x Palmeiras, which would take place last Wednesday (03/17), for the Independência stadium, in Belo Horizonte, but the local government also tightened the rules, and the game has been suspended.
