Foxconn wants to buy its first EV factory in the United States from Lordstown – Vision and sound – News

Foxconn has been mentioned in the past as a potential builder of Apple’s first car, something the Taiwanese company has always denied.

Whereas car manufacturers previously designed the cars themselves, partly manufactured and partly bought the parts themselves, and assembled the cars with these parts, it has been normal for some decades that the assembly for some models is outsourced to specialized companies that have their own factories.

This is also common with electronics and in particular telephones. For example, Foxconn does the assembly of many Apple phones. In recent years, it has become increasingly common for the assembly company to also take over other tasks from the telephone manufacturer, such as (parts of) the design process. As a result, the range of tasks of the assembly companies is increasing; in fact, the term assembly plant no longer covers it.

I expect Foxconn to do the same with car assembly: take over many more tasks in the supply chain. Perhaps we will soon see no Apple cars from a Foxconn factory, but cars with a brand name to be determined and with a lot of Apple hardware and design influences from a Foxconn factory.
