Four ski associations have lodged a complaint against Johan Eliasch’s FIS presidential election with the CAS Court of Justice.

The election of the FIS President John Eliasch has an aftermath. On May 26, 2022, at the FIS Congress in Milan, the Briton would be re-elected as President of the International Ski Federation for another four years. The election took place without a contestant, but the 60-year-old was only able to claim 70 of 126 delegate votes. Before the secret ballot, many voters left the room in protest. The delegates still present voted unanimously for Johan Eliasch.

After the election, the DSV spoke of a “farce”. Swiss Ski President Urs Lehman called Eliasch’s election a “Muppet Show”. In addition to the German and Swiss Ski Associations, the ÖSV and Croatia have also lodged complaints with the International Sports Court CAS in Lausanne.

The Deputy Managing Director of Swiss Ski, Diego Zuger, complained about the election: “The election procedure was a joke. An election in which the only valid vote is a yes vote does not correspond to our understanding of the law.” The external FIS legal adviser also did not accept procedural motions that were submitted. ÖSV General Secretary Christian Scherer reported that 15 associations including Austria demanded a secret ballot. However, this request was rejected.

It will be a few months before the CAS makes a decision. If the procedure for the election of the FIS President is judged to be legal, the applicants will accept the judgement. However, if formal errors are recognized by the CAS, the election would have to be repeated.
