Four Children Survive 40 Days in Colombian Jungle by Eating Cassava Flour and Fruit from Crashed Plane

The four children who survived for forty days in the Colombian jungle did so by eating cassava flour and fruit. The flour came from the crashed plane.

The foursome ate a total of 3 kilos of farina, a coarse cassava flour that is widely used by local tribes in the Amazon region. When that was gone, the children had to look for food in the jungle. Rescuers also found partially eaten pieces of fruit and full diapers around the plane.

The children belong to the Witoto tribe. They learned survival skills from their grandmother. Without that knowledge, they probably wouldn’t have been able to survive in the dangerous jungle.

The children of thirteen, nine, four and less than one year old are currently still in a hospital in the Colombian capital Bogota. They were taken there by ambulance helicopter on Saturday. They are still dehydrated and unable to eat yet, but they are out of danger.
