Formula 1 Announces Six Sprint Races in 2024 with Return of Chinese Grand Prix

Dec 5, 2023 at 1:31 PM Update: 41 minutes ago

Formula 1 will organize six Grands Prix with a sprint race in 2024, it was announced on Tuesday. That is the same number as last season. The locations do change. The returning race in China will be a sprint weekend.

The Chinese Grand Prix will be held again next season for the first time since 2019. The race was missing for four years due to the corona pandemic. It is one of two races that are classified as sprint races for the first time. Miami will also be a sprint weekend in 2024 and will therefore have a race over a third of a normal GP on Saturday

The other sprint races are in Austria, the United States (Austin), Brazil and Qatar. The Formula 1 calendar will have a record number of 24 races next year, provided they all go ahead. That number was expected to be reached in 2023, but China and Emilia-Romagna were eliminated.

“Since the introduction of sprint races in 2021, we are attracting more television viewers, there is more entertainment for fans on the track and there is more engagement on social and digital platforms,” says Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “So we look forward to new exciting events next year.”

The design is still being adjusted

Formula 1 still wants to adjust the design of the sprint race weekends. For example, there is talk of dropping the parcfermé rule, which means that teams are allowed to change almost nothing to the car after qualifying on Friday. Since this year, the result of the sprint race no longer determines the starting grid for the main race.

Preparation for the Formula 1 season starts on February 21 with winter testing in Bahrain. The first race will be held on Saturday March 2 at the same circuit. Max Verstappen then defends his world title. The Red Bull driver became world champion for the third time this year with nineteen victories.
