“Born winner” Mark McKenzie has the potential to play for Arsenal once he hones his considerable defensive talent with Belgian giants Genk, former US international Oguchi Onyewu told Het Nieuwsblad.

Onyewu may not have lived up to the potential that once saw Newcastle United and AC Milan pounce on the young central midfielder more than a decade ago.

But early signs suggest McKenzie could go one step further than his former Philadelphia Union teammate and make a name for himself at the top of the European game.

The 22-year-old Bronx-born man joined Genk in a £ 4 million deal two months ago.

And while McKenzie has yet to make his mark in Belgium, having started just four of the last eight league games, Onyewu believes the central midfielder may be strutting for one of England’s biggest clubs in no time. .

“Mark is having fun at Genk,” says McKenzie’s Onyewu.

“I am not worried about him at all. That boy is a born winner. It could be that he plays for Arsenal in two or three years.

“(During our time together at the Philadelphia Union) I saw someone with great potential in him. I took it under my protection. I became his guide in professional soccer. When I found out that he was going to sign for Genk, of course I congratulated him.

“It’s a good club, not as good as (my old team) Standard Liege, of course, but it’s still good!”

Interestingly, Arsenal have been linked to a summer raid for another highly rated Jupiler League center-back: Club Brugge’s Ivory Coast international Odilon Kossounou.

Meanwhile, Celtic were eager to sign McKenzie last year; the Hoops’ interest was confirmed by the Philadelphia Union themselves.
