Former South African president Jacob Zuma (81) has to go back to prison. In 2021, he was paroled after eight weeks in prison, due to his ill health. The Constitutional Court has now ruled that the release was illegal.

Zuma was president from 2009 to 2015. In 2021, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court. He would have tried to undermine the rule of law in all kinds of ways. For example, he refused to cooperate in an investigation into corruption during his presidency.

Medical emergency

Zuma reported in 2021 just before the deadline to serve his prison sentence. He was subsequently behind bars for just eight weeks, after which he was released on parole for medical reasons. He was admitted to hospital, but it was not clear what exactly was wrong with him. After he was released from the hospital, he was allowed to go home, where he was under close supervision.

Critics accused the former leader of using his medical problems as an excuse to be released earlier. The Supreme Court of Appeal previously ruled that the release was illegal, but that ruling was challenged by the prison. After the ruling of the Constitutional Court, Zuma will have to serve his remaining prison sentence.
