Former Senator Warns of Impending Economic Storm and Criticizes Dollar Policy in Uruguay

Former senator and candidate for president for the Colorado Party, Pedro Bordaberrycriticized the dollar policy in Uruguay and warned that an “economic storm” is coming.

In a new opinion column published in the newspaper El País, entitled “Whisky”Bordaberry used the film of that name to explain that it is a reflection of Uruguayan society “Don’t face problems, let them run and get fixed.”

For the former senator, that happened with drinking water: “We had a problem for years but we let it go waiting for someone else to fix it. pointed it out Jorge Batlle when Ing. Cosse proposed the construction of the Antel Arena. With the eloquence that characterized him and the authority of having opposed the tower of the same name, He said that before building an arena, it was necessary to invest in the supply of drinking water. They didn’t listen”he remembered.

In addition, he added that “like the brothers” protagonists of that film, today the opposition and the ruling party they reproach each other for “what one or the other did”.

“Fifteen years of the Broad Front government and instead of ensuring the supply of drinking water they spent 140 million on the Antel Arena, 300 on the Gas Sayago piles and more than 800 on Ancap’s adventures in Alur, cement, publicity and parties”, criticized Torque’s external adviser today, although he recognized that in the current government “There were delays” but he remembered the frontline governments “they left a country with rising unemployment, a growing fiscal deficit and a stagnant economyto which he added “the pandemic”.

For Bordaberry, another matter that is not given “attention” until it “explodes” is “the dollar”, matter in which he understands that “knowing what the end is” the “same mistakes” are repeated.

“In the early eighties it was with on the tablet and that phrase of The Martians. The crisis exploded along with it. Twenty years later, to late 1990s and early 2000s with the Brazilian devaluation and the later Argentine crisis and the dollar at 17 or 18. Now we are going the same way”detailed the former senator.

For this reason, the former politician from Colorado warned: “When it’s cheap to travel thanks to the value of the dollar, when it’s convenient go shopping in neighboring countries and border businesses start to complain and close, when tour operators claim that we are not competitivewhen appliances are cheapwhen producers and exporters see their local costs increasebecause an economic storm is coming.”

However, Bordaberry regretted that “no one seems to pay attention” to this situation. “We continue with monotony doing the same. Resigned to the technical explanations of some while the water comes out saltywe invested in a hurry in dams and pipelines, costs rise and the productive apparatus falls”.

“As the protagonists of Whiskey we hit the boot three times, we raise the curtain of the trade with our hand and have a cup of tea. Meanwhile we hope that the wire will hold up”concluded the current Torque adviser.
