[キト ９日 ロイター] – Ecuador’s President Raso announced that presidential candidate and former MP Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead on Thursday.
Local media had earlier reported that he was shot while campaigning in Quito.
The president posted on X (formerly Twitter), a short-text posting site, that “such crimes will definitely be punished,” and announced that he would hold an emergency meeting with top security officials.
Polls show Villavicencio’s approval rating at 7.5 percent, putting him fifth among the candidates for the presidential election scheduled to be voted on Wednesday.
