Covid-19, reelection and crisis. Those three words serve to summarize the hazardous and difficult time that Brazil is going through and the maneuvers of its president to maintain a power that is increasingly fragmented due to his mistakes in facing reality.

There is in the first place the uncontrolled crisis of a pandemic that leaves almost mind-boggling numbers. While President Jaír Bolsonaro persists in ignoring its lethality, the health services are overwhelmed, vaccination is chaotic because its management is exposed to the continuous rotation of the Ministers of Health, and the people do not seem to have a north in terms of application of the most elementary protection measures.

On the contrary, the beaches are congested and its visitors do not worry about wearing masks, while in the cities, especially in the north of the country, a strain is advancing that increases the risk and is already known in the world as the Brazilian. Three hundred and thirty thousand deaths from the coronavirus, with days like last Friday that left 3,780 people dead and the saturation of more than 90% of the intensive care units in the 14 states with the largest population, are the fatality figures that seem to overwhelm to Brazil, which does not prevent its president from criticizing governors and mayors who dare to establish restrictions of any kind.

For Bolsonaro, it is preferable to maintain employment than to fight the pandemic, even if the statistics show an enormous tragedy for the inhabitants of Brazil. And now, his goal is re-election, even if he has to sacrifice allies such as his Foreign Minister, an exponent of the extreme right accused of failing to buy the vaccines that are urgently required by what is recognized as the giant of South America. .

In this line of action, the controversial president changed another six of his close collaborators in a move aimed at strengthening his alliance with the moderate right-wing parties and neutralizing their dissatisfaction with what is happening. This included the request for the resignation of his Defense Minister, retired General Fernando Azevedo e Silva, a military man with forty years of service, which led to the resignation of the commanders of the army, navy and aviation, in protest of the treatment of which are the object of the military estates to which it is tried to involve in the party politics.

After the United States, Brazil is the second country in the world in the number of deaths caused by Covid-19, and together with Great Britain and South Africa it is recognized as having a strain that causes greater havoc. In addition, and as it happens everywhere, its economy is suffering the rigors of a crisis that destroys jobs and affects the social climate in such a way that the recovery is already measured in decades for many nations.

However, for its president it is more important to impose his radical ideology that includes ignoring Covid-19 and getting his re-election against all odds. That is the great crisis that not long ago was mentioned as one of the great powers of the world.
