Former Pope Benedict XVI dies

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Former Pope Benedict XVI died aged 95 on Saturday (31/12) after it was reported that his health had continued to decline.

“It is with deep sadness that we report that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away today at 9:34 am at the Mater Ecclesiae Convent in the Vatican,” Vatican News said with quotes.

“Further information will be provided as soon as possible,” he added.

The news of Benedict’s deteriorating health was first revealed by Pope Francis at a public meeting at the Vatican on Wednesday (12/28).

On that occasion, Pope Francis explained that his predecessor was very ill and asked everyone present to pray for him.

“I would like to ask all of you to offer a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict who has always supported the Church in its serenity. He is very ill,” Francis said.

“We ask God to comfort and support him in bearing witness to his love for this Church until the end of his life,” he added.

A Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, then confirmed that Benedict’s conditions had worsened due to age “in the last few hours”.

“His condition is currently under control and continues to be monitored by his doctor,” Bruni said Cnn.

Bruni added that Pope Francis also visited his predecessor at the Mater Ecclesiae convent in the Vatican after the public hearing.

Benedict XVI was elected the 265th Pope at the age of 78 in 2005. He is the oldest Pope ever appointed since Clement XII in 1730-1740.

Benedict resigned as pope in 2013 due to age and ill health. He is the first pope to resign in 600 years.

During this period, Popes complete their office until they are replaced when they die.
