Jakarta

Former CEO OpenAI Sam Altman and former OpenAI President Greg Brockman joined Microsoft. Altman was previously suddenly fired by the OpenAI board of directors and was rumored to be returning to lead the company that created ChatGPT.

Altman and Brockman’s defection was announced directly by the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In a post uploaded to X, Nadella said Altman and Brockman would join the advanced AI research team.

“We are very excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with colleagues, will join Microsoft to lead the advanced AI research team,” Nadella said in his announcement, as quoted by The Verge, Monday (20/11/2023) .

“We hope to move quickly to provide the resources needed for their success,” he continued.

Altman responded to Nadella’s tweet with a quote tweet and said “the mission continues.” Nadella responded to the tweet by providing a few hints about Altman’s new role at Microsoft.

“We’ve learned a lot over the years about how to provide space for founders and innovators to build independent entities and cultures within Microsoft, including Github, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I look forward to seeing you do the same,” said Nadella.

Even though Microsoft is pirating it Altman and Brockman, Nadella said Microsoft remains committed to its partnership with OpenAI. Microsoft is one of the largest shareholders in OpenAI, with an investment of around USD 10 billion.

Microsoft is also the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI and Microsoft cloud services power OpenAI’s products, research and API services. Microsoft also integrates OpenAI’s GPT service in a number of its products.

“We can’t wait to get to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and work with them,” said Nadella. Emmett Shear is the new interim CEO OpenAI appointed by the board of directors, replacing Mira Murati who held the position for two days.

Altman’s joining Microsoft was announced just hours after negotiations with OpenAI’s board to bring him back as CEO ended in deadlock. Altman had negotiated to return as CEO of OpenAI, but four members of OpenAI’s board of directors refused to step down and allowed him to return.
