The former volleyball player and Olympic champion Walewska Oliveira died this Thursday (21), in São Paulo. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Walewska was 43 years old and was champion for the Brazilian women’s team at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The athlete retired in 2022, ending her career at Praia Clube.
“My career was beautiful. I have a lot to thank everyone, Praia Clube for ending my career here, for participating in this group. I will cherish this moment for the rest of my life”, said the athlete last year in interview published no ge.
In addition to gold at the Beijing Olympics, Walewska won the bronze medal at the Sydney games in 2000 and was part of the team sent to Athens in 2004.
At Praia Clube, Walewska shone with the team that won the Superliga in the 2017/2018 season.
Recently, the athlete had released the biography “Outras Redes”, in addition to the documentary “O Último Ato”.
O Beach Clubthe last team that Walewska was part of, published a note lamenting the athlete’s death.
“Brazilian volleyball and the sports community have lost a true legend, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time”, says the note.
“May his memory and legacy continue to shine as a source of inspiration for future generations. The number 1 shirt, worn by Wal, was immortalized in our team in 2022 and will forever be remembered.”
In a social network, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) recalled Walewska’s achievements and award-winning career.
“Walewska was a special player, her career in the sport will forever be remembered and revered. At this difficult time, CBV sympathizes with the family and friends of this great player”, said CBV president, Radamés Lattari.
The women’s volleyball team player Sheilla Castro posted a photo of the launch of Walewska’s book in Belo Horizonte and wished strength to the athlete’s family.
“Walzinha, you have always been an example for me on and off the court. The pain is too great. Now the mourning is different due to your early departure.”
Former Olympic player and actress Lica Oliveira published a photo of Walewska, saying she didn’t believe her colleague’s death.
“Many prayers for you, your family, friends and fans. Volleyball family in mourning.”
