Former KPK Investigator Yudi Purnomo Harahap’s Warning for 2023 and Steps to Restore Trust in KPK

Jakarta

Former KPK investigator Yudi Purnomo Harahap considers 2023 to be a dark period for eradicating corruption in Indonesia. He touched on the status of a corruption suspect currently facing the former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Committee Firli Bahuri.

“2023 for me is the darkest period for eradicating corruption. Because in history the Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Committee has been a corruption suspect,” said Yudi when contacted, Saturday (30/12/2023).

Yudi said there were a number of steps that the KPK had to improve in facing 2024. First, the KPK, both at employee and leadership level, had to avoid ethical violations.

“The Corruption Eradication Committee must focus on its work and have no problems, both internal and external. If the Corruption Eradication Commission employees still have problems and the leadership is the same way, that’s the way the Corruption Eradication Committee is,” explained Yudi.

Yudi then talked about the importance of the role of leadership KPK in the improvement phase of the anti-corruption agency. He views that the interim chairman of the KPK, Nawawi Pomolango, has the capacity to restore public trust in the KPK.

“Pak Nawawi has no problem, no controversy. His track record is good in the eyes of employees,” he said.

According to Yudi, steps to restore public trust in the KPK can also be done by resolving prominent corruption cases. One of them was through the arrest of fugitive Harun Masiku.

Yudi assesses that this method is also being implemented by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) currently. At the end of December, the KPK is known to have searched the house of former KPU commissioner Wahyu Setiawan. Wahyu has also been questioned again by the KPK as a witness to Harun Masiku’s corruption.

“So, for example, Pak Nawawi can solve the cases that currently exist and arrest the fugitive, namely Harun Masiku, who is the most wanted and yesterday he moved to investigate Wahyu,” he said.

“Pak Nawawi is trying to revive public confidence by arresting Harun Masiku. If that happens I think at least the public will believe in the figure of Pak Nawawi and his KPK,” continued Yudi.

Yudi further supports Nawawi to be confirmed as permanent chairman of the KPK. He also hopes that Nawawi will not easily intervene while serving as Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission.

“Pak Nawawi can answer that challenge. For me, Pak Nawawi can be himself and cannot be intervened by anyone, whenever and in any way,” concluded Yudi.
