Former Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt Appointed as Norway’s Ambassador to the United States, Prime Minister Confirms Plans Had Ine Eriksen Søreide as First Choice

On Friday, it was announced that former Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt will become Norway’s ambassador to the United States.

However, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had Ine Eriksen Søreide ahead of Huitfeldt on the list of candidates. Søreide was asked before Huitfeldt, Støre confirms to NRK.

– First we asked Høyre’s foreign policy spokeswoman Ine Eriksen Søreide if she was interested in taking that job. She thought about the matter and declined. Then Anniken was the next one available, says Støre to NRK.

After the appointment on Friday, Huitfeldt made a statement on X.

– Today I was appointed as Norway’s ambassador to the USA. I thank Espen Barth Eide for the trust and faith in me that he shows me. I will work tirelessly to further strengthen our relationships and bonds as close friends and allies,” she wrote.
