Joshua Schulte, convicted in July 2022 of carrying out the most prolific leak in CIA history, has now been charged in New York with transporting and possessing thousands of images and videos showing rape and sexual abuse of children, found by the FBI.

Prosecutors claim that the FBI found the disturbing files using a password on one of his cell phones during the investigation into his CIA leaks. Schulte has argued, without evidence, that the FBI framed him for what he did at the CIA. He will not be allowed to make that plea at trial.
In his previous espionage case, jurors rejected his defense that he leaked highly confidential materials as revenge against co-workers and superiors over petty disputes. He was first tried in 2020, but a deadlocked jury was unable to reach a verdict.
Wikileaks reported in 2017 on custom CIA hacking tools leaked by Schulte, describing how the agency monitors foreign adversaries, including spying on people through their cell phones and landlines, televisions and even cars. Schulte had access to the stored materials while working as a systems administrator in an elite CIA hacking unit protected by armed guards.
Following his conviction in the summer of 2022 following the second trial, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Damian Williams described Schulte’s leak as “one of the most brazen and damaging acts of espionage in American history.”
Judge Jesse Furman recently upheld Schulte’s conviction on espionage and hacking charges and dismissed a charge alleging he lied to the FBI.
