Former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera (74) died in a helicopter crash on Tuesday. This is reported by the Chilean government. Piñera was president of Chile from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022.
The helicopter he was in crashed in Lago Ranco, a lake in the center of the country. That happened after heavy rainfall, writes ABC Internationale. Piñera piloted his private helicopter in the presence of three others, according to the outlet. This would include his sister.
The three other passengers survived the accident. Piñera couldn’t do that. His body has been found, Interior Minister Carolina Tohá reports. Chile’s current president, Gabriel Boric, has declared three days of national mourning.
The incident happened according to Third just before 3 p.m. local time. The former president is said to have had lunch with a businessman.
Piñera was a member of the right-wing liberal National Renewal party. In addition to his political career, he was also a businessman.
Under his first presidential term there was rapid economic growth and a sharp decline in unemployment. His second term was marked by violent protests against inequality, leading to accusations of human rights abuses. They ended with the government promising to draft a new constitution.
