Forest fires ravage southern Europe, 11,000 people evacuated near Bordeaux

The two major forest fires near Bordeaux are still not under control. The fire has now destroyed more than 7650 hectares of nature, more than 2300 more than yesterday. Other countries around the Mediterranean are also struggling with forest fires, which are spreading quickly due to the drought.

The fires in France are raging in the Gironde department, near La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from towns near Landiras last night. The number of evacuees has risen to more than 11,000, including 6,000 campers and 4,000 residents of the town of Cazaux.

The campers were accommodated in a conference center, among other things, but can’t go back for the time being to pick up their belongings. “Absolutely impossible,” a local official said. Most holidaymakers have returned home or have found accommodation elsewhere, for example with host families.

More than a thousand firefighters are fighting the fires that broke out on Tuesday. They get help from nine fire-fighting planes. As far as is known, no one was injured.

A fire broke out near Avignon on the south coast of France yesterday. About a thousand hectares of nature have burned down there, but the fire is now under control.

The fire spreads quickly due to prolonged drought, high temperatures and strong winds. In the south of France, temperatures of 40 degrees are expected in some places today, temperatures that are still exceeded in some Spanish regions.

Especially in Andalusia and Extremadura it is blistering hot. Forest fires have reduced a total of more than 6000 hectares in the western regions of Extremadura and Castile and León. Residents of a number of villages have been evacuated.

47 degrees

In Portugal, more than 30,000 hectares have already gone up in flames this year, the highest number since 2017. There are wildfires in about ten places in the country.

As in other countries, extinguishing in Portugal is made more difficult by the strong winds, drought and heat. Yesterday it became 45 degrees in several places and 47 degrees was even registered at a weather station, write Portugese media. That means a July record for the mainland.

Forest fires have also been reported in Italy. Last night there was a fire at Frauwaal in the province of South Tyrol. It was under control after a few hours. Last night, the fire brigade reported that they had fought a large forest fire near Genoa. There were also several fires on the north side of Lake Garda, which is popular with tourists.

Moroccan village destroyed

On the other side of the Mediterranean, Morocco also struggles with temperatures above 40 degrees. In the north of the country, forest fires are raging in areas that are difficult to access.

In the provinces of Larache and Taza, about 500 families have been evacuated as a precaution. A village near Ksar Sghir was destroyed by the fire, but there are no known casualties.
